08/20

Now I know regular readers of the Coates Family Blog must be just busting at the seams to get the latest instalment on the family trip down to Fukuoka. Well I can confirm for you right now, after speaking directly with the chief editor before she went to bed at 8pm, that an update is on it's way, and it's going to be a BONANZA! More pics, more tricks and more stories than you've ever seen before at the CFB.

But before this, I'm going to go right ahead and bore anybody who's still reading about a recent purchase I made. I'd sought financial approval months before, and it is only by chance I have this superb piece of shopping in my possession.

So what have you bought do I hear you ask?? Well here it is!

This is not just a pair of white shoes, heathens. This is a pair of:

それはシューズ・・・しかしただの白いシューズではありません。

2008 SIDI GENIUS 5.5 CARBON-COMPOSITE (NON-WIDE) STEEL/WHITE road shoes!!

Impossible to find, only one of less than 10 pairs available in Japan at the moment. And no stock due for months. You must want to find out just how I managed to get my hands on this rare gem, so I'll tell you!

I'd been searching for these shoes for months, and all the shops here in Nagoya simply had none left, with none on the way for months (and the Japan importer for SIDI is based in Nagoya, and they're often the first to get new stock).
I was in Tokyo with work the week before last, and had a little time to get to a couple of bike shops in the area. I had no expectations to find the shoes I was looking for, but like the good boy scout I once was, I was prepared - one pair of riding socks, and visits to the shops between 3 and 4pm (never try on bike shoes any earlier in the day than this; you need your feet to be as swollen as possible to replicate what your feet will swell to after doing a long ride on the bike).

However I wandered into a well-known suburban Tokyo shop, after trying a couple of others earlier in the day, and there they were! One pair of size 43, just arrived at the shop. After a long fitting session and confident I had the perfect fit, I made the purchase. Price, of course, is available on application No discounts to be had whatsoever, but the guy threw in a fold-up ruck-sack bag as a bit of a thankyou.

Below is my old pair of shoes next to the 5.5s, bought when I was in first year at uni (MANY years ahgo, when Look were still making shoes, about 15 years ago). They were a great shoe at the time, but they're no longer supporting my feet laterally (my feet feel like they're falling off the sides of the pedals sometimes), and I'm ending up with very tired/sore feet after even a medium length ride.

The new shoes are a carbon composite sole, but are still stiffer than my old 100% carbon shoes. Time has taken its toll on the Looks, that's for sure. The ratchet on the side of the shoes allows for on-the-move tightness adjustment (loosen it off a little when you're doing a long casual tour ride, quick couple of presses on the ratchet to tighten up for quicker/shorter rides or sprints).

So when am I going to get them on? As soon as I position the cleats. There's an 80km event race next month not far from here that I want to do, but I only found out about it yesterday. Will keep the CFB readers posted! Woo hoo!!!!!
